. I ·: 'PIATE GLASS VASE No. 39' is a striking example of the work of · Sidney R. Hutter. Cut, . polished and laminated plate glass is used In the work, which Is included in an International display-0Uhe Queensland Art Gallery. Ne"" glass directions in art on show Glass is a comparatively new medium for art forms and sculpture, but in America artists have begun to fashion glass creatively rather than make ar– ticles of purely commercial purpose. Thirty-four American artists, five from Great Britain and· three from Japan have contributed w a display en– titled "International Directions in Glass Art", which has been described as " the most spectacular exhibition of glass ever seen in Australia." The display is now at the Queensland Art Gallery. New trends and technical skills associated with the contemporary use of this medium are on show. During the past 20 years artists work– ing il1 glass have influenced industry both f~om a practical and from an aesthctic·vicwpoint. The Director of the Queensland Art Gallery, Mr Raoul Mellish, says tht he "hopes this o.itbjbition will provide a stimulus to cxoo'heau or 2lass art and the general public who will, for the first time in Queensland, be able to ap– preciate the potential of glass as a medium for artistic expression." Much or the success of this display relics on optical cffccts which rcsul1i from the translucency, opaqueness, tex– tures and prismatic surfaces of tt.e glass forms seen. For example, the Japanese artist, Kazuko Eguchi's '"Melancholy 1981'" is a sculpture installation where waved sheets of slumped glass stand vertically in a field of sand. A blue gla,s um– brella provides contrasting yet com– plimentary form s. The effect is one of sadness and isolation for the viewer. "Cylinder in the Spheric Space 1981" by Libcn:,ky ·•d Brychtova is a sculpture of cast and cut glass and is reminiscent of the global polyester resin ·works of Toowoomba's Keith Mitchell who has been working in this similar medium for the past five years. The cx-1 hibition continues until November 21. · .. , The Financial Review 15 November 1982 -- :aueensland• :Art Gallery ndat· . .
