The sculpture was crcatl'.d by e••patriate Australian Lindsay Daen, who has lived abroad since the late 1940s and is now rcsi• dent in Puerto Rico. It depicts a naked James Morrill, the British sailor who was shipwrecked off Townsville in 1846 and lived for 17 years with Aboriginals, with two brolgas. The idea or Daen crcatin~ a sculpture as a suitable centenary memorial for the north Queensland sugar company was made by the late Australian artist, Sir Russell Drys– dale, before he died in 1981 . Sir Russell, a grandson of one or the company rounders, was a director or Pioneer Sugar. Lady Drysdale is cQming to Brisbane to– night for the unveiling of the 2.75 m • 4.2 m work by the Governor, Sir James Ramsay.
