The Entombed Warriors features figures from the recently discovered burial pits of the Emperor Qin Shihuang, whose 2000 year old underground army of terracotta soldiers was found by accident in one of the most remarkable archaeolog– ical surprises of this century. Part of the excavation work can been seen in the photograph on the front cover. The exhibition was offered to Australia by the People's Republic of China to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the re-establishment in December, 1972, of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Nine life-size figures of warriors and horses with weapons and implements make up the exhibition which is touring Australia for nine months. ARMED FOR BATTLE It will be at the Queensland Art Gallery until June 5. In 1974. farmers near the city of Xian in Shaanxi province In north-western China were drilling for water in the fields when they discovered quantities of large pottery fragments. They were the first indications of the ancient Emperor's pottery soldiers armed for battle. When archaeologists took over the site they uncovered a whole regiment of more than 7000 life-size figures in three separate pits. Excavations at the site are still continuing. The burial pits were commissioned by the Emperor for his own tomb. Apart from the nine figures on show at the Art Gallery, supplementary material are also on display. They Include bronze and ceramic vessels from the same site, some examples of real armour which were buried with the figures and a scale model of genuine chariots buried In the pits. There are also mural-sized montage photographs of the figures in their original tomb site and views of the excavation work. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday and untll 9 p.m. on Friday and between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $3.50 for adults and $2.00 for children and those with conces– sions. There are special family tickets for two adults and up to three children, or one adult and up to four children for a total price of $10. Treasurer against super changes The Deputy Premier and Treasurer, Dr Edwards, has come out against any reduction in benefits to contributors to the superannuation scheme. He makes the point clearly in a letter dated April 13, to the Union. In it he says : "As rumours have spread that the Government is considering reducing the benefits to Public Servants as far as the Public Service Superannuation Scheme is concerned, especially following the statement in November 1982 by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Wright indicating his policy for reduced benefits and the imposition of ceiling for superannuation lump sum payouts, I am writing to you as Deputy Premier and Treasurer and Leader of the Liberal Party Indicating that my Party has a commitment to honour the obligations of the present superannuation scheme and would not support any reduction in benefits to contributors. "In a state the size of Queensland with its development and progress, the role played by a secure and professional public service wlih lis lmpartlal advice to Government has In no small way assisted tremendously our State's progress. "My Party therefore supports the continued importance of a very professional public service and honouring commitments to an existing scheme for contributors is vital so that professional public servants can plan their retirement with security and confidence."
