Not all this land will be required for the sq11nrc. The use to be made of what Is left over when buildings now occupying it have been demolished will determine the final appearance of the square and also ill! value as a civic Improvement. Here la an opportunity for giving Brisbane 11n art gallery right in the centre of the city. Before the City Council commit • Itself to aelllng for commercial u11e11 all the land it will not need for widening King George Square, it Hhould consider rel!l!rvlng sufficient to 1mpply Brisbane's long lack of a cul• tural centre. Pieced along· side King George Square a new 11rt gallery would be llC· cesslble to more people than It would be on Rnv of various other sites suggested from time to time. The City Council could make a strong case for ask• Ing the State Government to help It. The national art col• (ection is a State I.rust for all Queensland's people. The makeshift accommodation it has had for so long In the old exhibition building Rt Bowen Bridge is not on!~, out of the wsy. It hea become hope– lessly inade<1uete both for dh,playing and ~toring velu• able art treasures. Brisbane Riso needs a civic theatre. lts people h&ve often had to miss out!rt.anding dramatic end operRlic pro• ductlona or have had to put up with curtailed seasons for lack of a theatre lo take them.
