AY A stuffed cat's a Crueificion, Hitler, Bob Dylan, Vietnam War, Life in the City: They seem like a mixed up Parody o' cliches and dada like shocks, but Brett Whiteley combines all these expertly in his large painting "Port· rait of Arthur Rim– boud" from .I 971. It's on show at the Annual Queensland Art Gallery acquisitions Show. The Show L~ worth seeing. The Paint• ing by Whiteley is an excellent example of his work. the way he utilises everything available to him, He has sprayed, collaged, drawn, and .-inted his way over an area like no other Aus– tralian Artist can -m to do. He really Is a fine dnfunn. An older Australian Artist, James Wieneke presented the Gallery with some of his War drawings from the I940's. Two pen and wash drawings "Attack– ing Wewak Point" and "H ,, t•ital Ward" arc bca,1:1Fully done in a Comic stn p manner and refreshin g to look at. Despite being done in 1945, they have" slrangc contemporary feel .•1'uut them. Two of Austm.ha 's belier known contem– porary Artists J o hn Leth– ridge und Robert MacPherson also have works on show. John Letheridge gives us some drawings come paintings of a series of pencils and it really is hard to d~ ade how lo view them. Obviously, they're about something other than what say Bretl Whileley's is about, but hanging on the wall beside Brett Whiteley's, it looks a bit lonely. I kept looking for the accompanying statement to explain it but it wasn't there. The Robert MscPher– son work really isn't very interesting at all or per– haps, it wasn't made to be intemting. It isn't one of the Artist's better works, and as I read the Catalogue, 1 see it was presen led by I he Queens– land Art Galleries Art Society. I think they could have presented a better example of his work. Besides lhis, they also presented five Ceramic pieces, which are equally as disappointing. Away from I hese, there arc some interest· ing works, a pastel by Loueen Morrison , a Laurence Daws etching, and a rew of Sydney Nolan's etchin~ from hi, dust series are worth viewing.
