I T looks as if Queensland could miss out on seeins another International exhibition - this time the magnificent Russian collection of masterpieces. The exhibition, which In– cludes works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Titian, Is due to be staged later this year ... but only In Sydney and Melbourne. Efforts arc being made by the Queensland Art Gallery to make Brisbane a third venue for this important exhibition. But South Australla, by re– putation a more sophisticated and arts-appreciative state, also has put in a strong bid. If the efforts or the gallery are unsuccessful It will be a blow to the blossominl{ arts scene in Queensland. Queenslanders must be asking themselves why they are denied the chance to admire such treasures. It Isn't the rtrst lime. The state missed out on the Chinese Exhibition simply be1•a11se It did not have n venue to give it an adequate display, We were denied oratory or Billy Graham, and had to settle for an understudy. Some cultural lenders be– lieve Queensland's Image could be a factor In the minds of those who deelde on venues for the arts. Oertalnly, a c ts like the eager destruction or the Belle– Vue Hotel don't help our re– putation. On the 11111s s ide, Inst year's El Dorado Colombian Gold Exhibition was more s uccess– ful here than In any other state. Our painters are among the country's best. The cultural centre being built on the South bank of the river should put Queensland firml y on the arts map. All Queenslanders are NOT culturally ignorant. It would be unfair to those concerned, and a sad commentary on the state as a whole, If our bac~k woods and anti-lntelle • tual Image stopped s from 'having the best ,...., ., ,. - .. ~
