BRISBANE MECCA FOR DISPLAYS Prints, contemporary ceramics end recent acquisitions are focal points at three Queensland Art Galleries. The Western Pacific Prinl Blennale 1978 is the second Biennale to be held in Australia by the Print Council or Australia with assistance from the Visual Arts Board. This exhibition 111 the Civ11 An Gallery and Mu seum, City Hall, Brisbane, displays the work or print-makers from 12 countries in the western Pacific region . Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Paki stan, Philippines, ingapore, Thailand and Australia arc represented. Narional traditions are orren reflected in 1he sub– ject maller of these prints, but indHduality in technical and conceptual approach is evident. Les Kossatz's "Three Exits" is of sheep images related 10 Australia' s pastoral background, but the artist's personal irony regarding lhe slaughter of animals is also evident in the surreal tone or lhis lithograph where seven parallel rows or draped sheepskins haunt the viewer. A variety of screen· prints, clchlngs, wood– culS, lithographs, mez– zotln1s and drypoints comprise 1he 48 works on display unlil February 4. The Queensland Art Gallery shows "Image and Idea, " a view of con- 1cmpr,rary ceramics in Britain. Two weeks ago this column reviewed avant-garde Japanese ceramics and it is in– teresting to compare 1hc present-day ceramic scene in these two countries. Many of the British works arc l'cry small in scale and very delicate in weigh1 and finish . Pie-· rured here is "Opening Flower Bowl" by Mary Rogers.
