,, Unusual exhibition of textiles at Queensland Art Gallery The exhibition "Dyeing; Fibre and Fabric", which closed at the Queensland Art Gallery on the 19 November Is the first of a planned aeries of touring craft programs to be presented by the State Gallery aimed at stlmulatlng public Interest In the creative use of fibre and fabric materlala. The e>Chlbltlon featured works by some of Australia's leadlng crafts people and Is the first to be mounted by the gallery focussing e>Ccluslvely on ·the Ingenuity and skill of the dyer's art. Through the many displays It Is possible to e>Cplom the Intriguing techniques and results which can be achieved with various processes using both synthetic and natural materials, Accompanying the e>Chlbltlon Is a wealth of didactic material selected from a wide range of reference sources to · Interest both the experienced craftsman and the casual visitor . This material contains Interesting and not commonly known Information on the history of dyeing and one aspect of particular Interest Is the Queensland cochlneal/cacto– blastis story, After the e>Chlbltlon's two week showing In Brisbane It went directly to lpswlch for two weeks. Other Queens– land centres to be toured are: Klngaroy, 8-18 February, Dalby, 20th February-4 March, Stanthorpe, 8-18 March, Warwick, 20 March -1 April and Toowoomba 3-17 April. The exhibition not only serves as a means of displaying the many faceted area of craft but directly Involves .people at a working level through a program of lectures and working seminars. The programs are strateglcly located throughout the state enabling access for people In outlying areas who do not normally enjoy the benefits a major gallery offers. The exhibition forms the basis of what will be a comprehensive extension service when the new gallery In the Queensland Cultural Centre becomes fully operational. Throughout the tour craftsmen .will conduct a related lecture and workshop program at selected venues. The workshops are geared to both beginners and craftsmen working In such areas as clothing , screen printing, embroidery and weaving . The State Library of Queensland has provided a support service of related reading material which will travel with the exhibition and be available for reading In the display areas. "Dyeing Fibre and Fabric" Is presented by the Queensland Art Gallery with a grant generously made by the Crafts Board of the Australia Council.
