In early Japan, packages were made from local mate– rial to serve a purpose. So evolved a unique art form . But this ancient craft was disappearing amid a w or 1d of technological change until the head of a leading Japan se design school, Hide_yuki Okn, "fell under the spell" of J apanese packagin g, He wrote a book entitled "How To Wrap Five More Eggs," and later began to collect examples .of the packaging art and plan ex– h I b It I O 11 s. The lnLer– nattonally acr·. ,ned exlil– bltlon, "The t of the Japanese Pack.Bge," grew from this. The exhibition Is the Queensland Gallery's con– trlbuLlon to the Warnna Festival. The acting J apa– nese Consul-General In Brisbane, Mr Kelk! Hlrnga, will open the exhibition tonight, with the first pub– lic showing tomorrow In normal gallery hours. It will continue until October 17. On display wlll be 200 packages, Including food con talners made or tree leaves, ceramic oil contain– ers, a bag of handmade pa– per for rice crackers, bam– boo containers !or various purpo$es, reed matting used to wrap ·confectionery, and various enrthenwarc· con– t lners. But the packages hn ve Lo be seen to Cully understand the Inventiveness or gener– ations of early Japanese and the beauty of what they created. In the Introduction to the superb catalogue accom– P any Ing the exhibition Hldeyukt Oka says: "They are whispered evidence of the Japanese abtltty to create beaut,y from the sim– plest products of nature.
