Queensland Art Gallery Presscuttings Book 8 : Pressclippings, 1977-1981

Every picture tells a story. But some are more colortul than others as I dis– covered this week after a visit to the Queensland Art Gallery. The occasion was the opening of an exhibition titled Dyeing, Fibre and Fabric. It seems that dyeing has ·a history more vibrant and exotic than a hot house full or orchids. II seems such common– J>ln,·e things as shellllsh, .snfrlower, sarrron, cochl• neal, walnut husks and ,·nustlc soda are Just a r~w of the many every– dny Items which are used to produce dlflerent colors. The exhibition In– cludes wall hangings, screen prints, wall sculptures, landscapes, fabric paintings, batiks and numerous Items or clothIng. Several of the exhlb· ttors Including Ruth Stoneley, Jean Carman and Molly Tufrley were at the opening. And what choice could there be thnn the Minister for Culture, National Parks and Recreation, Ivan Gibbs, to orflctally get the ~how off the ground. Arnone those spotted al the opening were Mr Jusllre Peter Connolly, Dr Norman Behan, the Director ar the Crafts Board or the Australia Council, David Williams, who was In town spec– lnlly from Sydney, gal– lery director Raoul Mel– lish, Mac Campbell, Lll• Ian Pedersen, !\lac Car– man, Rhyl Shepherd, John Maher and Kevin Siddell. Others there were Alan and Judith Calla1han, Norm Llewellyn, Jane Whlteoak, Grate Fryer, Brian Dean, Brian Bahnlsch, Rod O'Loan, Ro• MatAllan, Jim Alt– kenhtad, Pat Clark Ryan and lllary Walate.
