4 The need for private as well as government support Richard Austin's concern to augment government financial support with private and corporate support was of great benefit to the Gallery, particularly through the Japanese companies-based Exhibitions Development Fund. 1 His own background in Asia and in private enterprise enabled him to play a considerable personal role in raising money for the Gallery and in generating private support for the Gallery. The Queensland Art Gallery Foundation, under the Chairmanship of Sir Bruce Watson, made an essential contribution and Richard Austin worked closely with the Foundation at this time. 2 He also made a number of important speeches on the occasion of Foundation meetings, which expressed his views on this subject. I Speech to accept the collection of twenty photographs by Max Dupain, gifted to the Queensland Art Gallery by CSR Umited on the occasion of the opening of CSR House, 60 Edward Street, Brisbane, 24 June 1987 It gives me great pleasure to receive, on behalf of the Trustees of the Queensland Art Gallery, these splendid photographs by Max Dupain-the more so since this is the first time I have taken part in a handover ceremony since I was appointed Chairman just one month ago.' For almost a decade, CSR Limited has been well known as a major patron of Australian art. From 1978 onwards, the Company's commissions of photographs from leading Australian photographers have given much valuable support and stimulus for the visual arts and have provided a standard of excellence for corporate sponsorship of the arts in Australia. The Queensland Art Gallery's involvement with CSR began in 1985, when the Company generously sponsored the exhibition 'CSR Photography Project: Selected Works', held at the Queensland Art Gallery from November 1985 to January 1986, and which toured to Queensland regional centres in 1986. We are delighted that the Company's concern for the visual arts in Queensland has extended to this gift . These works have been carefully selected for Queensland: they include images of north Queensland sugar cane farms, and mills and cattle properties, taken by Dupain from the mid 1950s to the late 1970s.
