Vew from the chair: Speeches of Richard WL Austin

Trustees Citation IN RECOGNITION OF THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE OF RICHARD W.L. AUSTIN, AO, OBE Chairman of the Board of Trustees Queensland Art Gallery 23 May 1987-5 May 1995 In honouring Mr Austin's eight years as Chairman, Trustees recognised that his initial appointment took into account his long and distinguished association with the arts, and his outstanding contributions to Australian diplomacy and business, particularly in relation to the Asia region. This association continued with his appointment, especially with Japan when the Gallery's cultural and sponsorship interest were pursued with · great diplomacy and significant achievement. His leading of a delegation to Shanghai to negotiate a major antiquities exhibition was a further illustration of Mr Austin's skills as a diplomat and his commitment to extend the Gallery's influence in Asia. Under Mr Austin's chairmanship, the Gallery underwent unprecedented change, as he sought to give the institution a dynamic regional, national and international focus. His attributes as public speaker and advocate helped make the Gallery the most visible and highly regarded gallery in Australia. Mr Austin's thorough knowledge of the arts and his sense of innovation enabled a series of highly appropriate initiatives to occur. His direct and personal involvement in these confirmed the Gallery's status as a leader in museum development and program activity. These initiatives included creating the collection representing the Six Old Kilns of Japan, the establishment of the Exhibitions Development Fund and his skilled advocacy to Government for the need for building extensions. Mr Austin's record of achievement is to be seen in all areas of the Gallery's activity. He skilfully enhanced the Gallery's capacity to maintain a respected profile and repeatedly displayed his concern for the needs and expectations of the public and supporters of the Gallery. Mr Austin's unfailing recognition of the professional attributes and responsibilities of the Gallery's staff and the unique and proper role of Trustees ensured widespread respect and admiration for his chairmanship, both in Queensland and throughout Australia, for this allowed the Gallery to flourish as a cultural innovator. In recognising the skills he will continue to bring to the Gallery, Trustees agreed to offer Mr Austin the role and tide of Honorary Adviser, Asian Art. 6
