Shows Promise I Young Painter OPENED yesterday at the Moreton Galleries is an exhibition of pictures by one of Brisbane's younger artists, Joy Roggenkamp. She presented her first one -woman show. UES ROGGENKAMP ex- "- Intoned 28 paintings in oil and watercolours depicting ctrect scenes and landscape. She has a strong colour setae: her work is bold, often gay and decorative with a keen flavour of originality. The work has its deficiencies, and what I have to say regard- ing them must not be inter- preted to mean that I am un- mindful of Mrs. Roggenkamp's courage, initiative, and feeling -no indeed: but at this stage of her development, she re- quires assistance and guidance. The basic trouble with much of the work is that it lacks suf- ficient control of relative values.* Unfortunately it is hardly possible to neglect such a cardinal principal and pro- duce good painting. Again one is far from comfortable in the company of so much yellow - green of the same top note And I become somewhat down hearted when thinking about the future condition of water colours, forced toendurit I ether uncertain loads of white body colour. The skilful use of white paper is unquestionably more difficult to handle. but it will mellow with the remainder of the picture; and in any case is better for the artist as well as the ultimate owner. Considering the undoubted talent and promise Miss Roggenkamp possesses, she would, I believe, make great progress if she forgot for a time the painting of pictures to frame, and concentrated on a more penetrating study of nature-skies, trees, tone, &c., and discovered the simple, but important laws of light. And now one has only to look at the stimulating evi- dence in such works as the at- tractive "Mangrove - a n d Moss," "Church in Winter" or the cheerful and interesting "Winter Landscape" and the "Wayside Garage,' with its pattern and solidity, to apprec- iate the promise. I hope it is fulfilled.-JAMES WIENEKE. `MI Art was the controversial subject when critic James Wieneke (left) chatted with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bell at the Moreton Galleries.
