It is even more so when one considers the importance of the event and the value of the prizes offered. In some cases, it seems the attempt at creation has be- come mere apeing and this is not a healthy sign in an exhibition of this nature. Do these competitions do anything for art? After viewing this collection one is inclined to say no-defin- itely. A deal of energy and money has been expended on this; show to no purpose whatso- ever. And what is really disturb- ing, is the ever-increasing monotony of dirty scratched paint, plus. low pitched values which seem to have become a la mode in Australia. y. The successful entries were: "Walleroo," by Jeff Smart. of South Australia, "The Bathes." by Jean Bellette. N.S.W.. and "Country Near Canberra," by John Elder - slum of N.S.W. It is really a relief to return to the lower and main gallery.
