It is even more so when one considers the importance of the event and the value of the prizes offered. In some cases, it seems the attempt at creation has be- come mere apeing and this is not a healthy sign in an exhibition of this nature. Do these competitions do anything for art? After viewing this collection one is inclined to say no ---defin- itely. A deal of energy and money has been expended on this show to no purpose whatso- ever. And what is really disturb- ing, Is the ever-increasing monotony of dirty scratched paint. plus,low pitched values which seem to have become a In mode In Australia. The successful entries were: "Walleroo." by Jeff Stuart, of South Australia, "The Bathers." by Jean Hellette, N.S.W., and "Country Near Canberra," by John Elder - shave of N.S.W. It is really a relief to return to the lower and main gallery. STATE ART PRIZE AWARDS The three works to repre- sent Queensland in the Com- monwealth Jubilee art com- petition have been selected. They were: Quentin Hole's "Sunday Afternoon," D. R. Cowen's "Return Into Light" and Gwendolyn Grant's "Cane Cutting." The judges were the direc- tor of the National Gallery (Mr. Robert Haines I, Miss Lain, and Mr. William Grant. The director said the judges were very Pleased with the quality of the three works selected. The three selected works, with four other entries, will be shown in the National Gal- lery for two weeks from Tues- day, July 17. The final judging of works from all States will be held in Brisbane on August 17.
