FOREWORD Scott Pendlebury and Nornie Gude (Mrs. Pendlebury were students together at the National Gallery Schools in Melbourne, where Nornie Gude won the coveted Travelling Scholarship in 1941. Scott Pendlebury was then serving with the 4th Australian Infantry Brigade A.I.F., and they were married prior to his embarkation for New Guinea in 1943. After the war these two highly gifted artists steadily built up reputations by winning many major awards for oils and water-colours throughout Australia, including two Wynne Prizes and two Crouch Prizes. They both travelled abroad in 1958, studying and painting in England, Italy, Spain, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. Scott Pendlebury is the Senior Master at the Swinburne Technical College Art School, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Council Member of the Victorian Artists Society. He is represented by works in the National Galleries of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and provincial centres, and although he works close to the tradition of the Australian Impressionist School, his paintings have Romantic overtones which give a quality more satisfy- ing than the recording of effects of light and atmosphere. Nornie Cude is a member of the Australian Water Colour Institute and the Victorian Artists Society, and is repre- sented by work in the National Gallery of Victoria, the Perth, Bendigo, Geelong, Ballarat, and Castlemaine Galleries. Her work too is characterised by a strong personal approach, with an unusual mastery over the water-colour medium. Both work in landscape and portraiture with equal facility, and although they have held joint exhibitions before, this is the first one in Brisbane. James Wieneke, Moreton Galleries. L.
