FOREWORD The late Miss Bessie Gibson was born in Ipswich in 1868. She received her early training at the Brisbane Technical College and later went to Paris where she lived and worked for almost 40 years. She returned to Australia in 1947 and lived quietly here until her death in 1961. Miss Gibson's work is known to all art lovers in Bris- bane as she held a number of highly successful ex- hibitions here on her return from France where she had frequently exhibited in the Paris Exhibitions. The French Impressionists greatly influenced her but she took what she required from this now famous school and developed her own individual style which became one of rare sen- sibility and restraint and completely adequate for her purpose. Her work is timeless because it is good. The gentle feeling in her painting is eloquent of her sincerity and sensitivity. A Gibson painting is something apart; it has little to do with the meticulously finished work of the past, the contemporary or the abstract. It exists because it is a very personal reflection of the thought and vision of a highly skilled and devoted artist who lived and worked for the wonderful joy of expressing herself in paint, and in so doing, became one of the finest women painters Australia has produced. In 1958, The Queensland Art Gallery Society, with the co-operation of the Gallery Trustees arranged an Ex- hibition of her work at the Queensland Art Gallery which has, over the years, acquired a number of her works. Miss Bessie Gibson is represented hi the Galleries of Europe and Australia and in the major public and private collections of Queensland and other States. This collection f her work has been selected to ex- hibit the fine quality and variety of subject and medium of Miss Gibson as a portrait painter, miniaturist, land- scape painter and water colourist.
