FOREWORD This foreword, written by the painter of the works on exhibition, makes no attempt to supplement the effects of the works themselves by effusive description. Paintings should sp°ik for themselves, justify their own existence in paint. It can be said, however, that I regard nature as the fount of art. I also believe it provides the link between art and the art lover. A distinction must be drawn between nature and art, of course. They are not the same by any means. Much of the delight which art gives, on all levels of taste, springs from the awareness that it is art. It so happens that all the works in this exhibition have been painted direct from nature, but that is not considered as a criterion in itself. The artist may paint direct as from accumulated know- ledge and perception. There are many fine examples of both methods of work. 12. 13. 14. In both, however, it is the quality of what the artist has expressed, and the degree of art in the expression which const:tute the ult;mate measure of the work. Present-day Art movements of abstract expressionism, action painting and the like must be so measured no less than other forms of art. If the Abstract Expressionist really has something to express and is not basing art on art, his production will reveal relation to some universal order.
