Townshend, is exhibiting 30 of his pa'itings at the Moreton Galleries, ' Edward Street. He is bold yet sensitive and possesses the technica qualifications for the pro- duction of some very at- tractive works. He sometimes reaches a delightful oriental plicity. Two paintings stand out. They are Yachts in the Bay, a piece having splendid qualities of dramatic effect. and Old Coastal Trader, Sydney. The latter beau- tifully expresses tran- quillity after storm and stress. Townehend does. ri However, in these days of ours, one fails to see the point in depicting cottages, 'country roads, and seashores n a naturalistic-academic the painter -looks -through- -window winner." The contemporary art- ist Identifies himself with nature, projecta himself into her. This requires empathy and Imagination, not only an eye. Some of Townshend'e water colours are more in- teresting as compositions then others. They are: "Yachts in the Hay," 'The Old Estate and Mr. Meany," and "The Scolding."
