His fundamentally com- mercial art training I, only weakly disguised by rather tiresome mannerisms, which do not amount to a style. The paintings of land- scape and slummy street scape are frequently sloppy in construction and the would - be - spontaneous smears with thin, washy oils, or the device of flinging M. lines in all directions in or- der to pull together unre- lated elements and to cre- ate an impression of ness, do not disguise a lack of imagination. Among 27 smallish oils the best are those In a more straightforward im- pressionist manner, such as "Bus Stop," and the rather quiet "Level Cross- ing, Coorparoo."
