C Country scene on canvas John Row+11, painter of the Atm. iralian scene. Is now showing his oils at the Moreton Galleries. His name has long been associated with soand craftsmanship in depicting impressions of the countryside in such a manner as to have almost universal appeal. Painted in a high key most efforts convey well the light the painter has endeavoured to capture. "The Sunlit Farm," "Down to the Se .1." "The Hilltop" and "Enfolding Hills" all speak eloquent- ly of the painter's succes, in this direction. "Swamp Ginn' and "Sunlight kfter Rain" are effective and the quietness of evening light in "In the Hill Country" appeals in contrast. A fine poetic feeling has been realised here. "Cape Schanck" is an attractive work dealing with the rugged splen- dour of Victoria's sou!li- em coastline. The painter is not so happy in his flower , pieces and in this section , "Spider Chrysanthe- mums" stands out as the', better. - MELVILLE HAYSOM. 6 IMPRESSIONISM is the one evergreen movement in local art. That it is not neces- sarily static is evi- denced by John Rowell's recently exe- cuted landscape and portrait sketches, The artist's use of color shows a closer relationship with the French than the Australian traditional school of tonal impression- ism.
