"If you were asked to choose a Picked by the wirlgrts work of art for yourself from the Queensland Art Gallery, what would it be?" That was the question. He chose the painting reproduced on the right and gives these reasons for his selection: "I save selected Sam Fullbrook's painting 'Portrait of Ernestine Hill,' for reproduction. Being a recent acquisition for the Queensland Art Gallery Collection it remains vividly in my mind as a very fine painting. Color comes, I feel, in Fullbrook's painting to create a mood and to explore the possibilities of subtle tones and colors with overtones. As the picture progresses, these qualities begin to rkat.J.iate and the subject becomes partly dissolved in the play of. shape and color. The portrait still remains, the character vi.ridly retained, recognition of th, subject still to the tone, but over and above this an emotion felt by color. Along with this is accomplished technique - and individuality. Soft and luminous with the slosh of red mouth as a dominant note. Contours are lost and found in the most subtle way. Animahons and gesture are achieved by the diagonal composition, oil adding up to a remarkabe portrait in the idiom of our time." The Sunday Mail Color Magazine, September 15, 1974 7
