The subject of the three paintings is the Awelye fo r the Mountain Devil Lizard - Arnkerthe. The word 'Awelye' has several meanings. It describes the whole concept of Arnkerthe, that is, the big picture. It describes the ceremony or ceremonies associated with Arnkerthe, and it describes the body paint and decoration for those ceremonies. These paintings all draw from this body of knowledge and experience. Since the late 1970s the three artists have been making images in non-traditional media.
