Beyond the Future: Papers from the Third Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art

Directorship the Queensland Art Gallery has developed a strong engagement with Asia especially through the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. HOU HANRU (p.99) Hou Hanru is an independent art critic and curator. Born in China, he currently lives in Paris and works internationally. He has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions includ ing 'Cities on the Move' ( 1 997-1 999), the French Pavilion , Ven ice B iennale 1 999, Mexico Photography Biennale, 1 999, 'Gare de L'est' 1 998 , and the Johannesburg Biennale. He was a co-curator for APT3 (Crossing Borders) and has contributed to the APT3 Catalogue and the on-line Conference. PROFESSOR SALIMA HASHMI (p.44) Sal ima Hashm i is Professor of Fine Art at the National College of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan . She studied painting and photography at the Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, UK and later at the Rhode Island School of Design, USA. Salima has been a practising artist since 1 969, and has participated in exhibitions in Pakistan, the USA, Europe, M iddle East, Russia, South Asia and Japan , as well as in the Sao Paolo Biennale, the Tokyo Art show, Dhaka Biennale and Delhi Triennale . In 1 994 she co-curated the show of Pakistani women artists titled 'An Intell igent Rebellion' which travelled to Britain and France. She has written extensively on contemporary Pakistani art and craft and is completing a book on Pakistani women artists titled Unveiling the Visible. Salima was Principal of the National College of Arts from 1 995-1 999 and is currently teaching at the same College. For APT3, she was co-curator (Pakistan) and a catalogue writer. AMANDA HENG (p.46) Amanda Heng was born in Singapore in 1 95 1 . She is one of the p ioneer members of the Artists' Village, the first artist-run alternative art space in Singapore. She participated in the 3rd Artists' Regional Exchange Program in 1 992 and was principal organiser of 'The Space', a fringe event of the 1 992 Singapore Festival of Arts. Amanda stud ied at the La Salle College of Arts in Singapore and in Australia and in 1 993 acquired her BFA at the Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia. Major exh ibitions include 'The 1 st Fukuoka Triennial Asian Art Trienniale' ( 1 999), 'Imaging Selves', Singapore Art Museum ( 1 999), 'Women About Women', Singapore Art Museum ( 1 998), 'Womanifesto', Concrete House Art Center, Bangkok ( 1 997) and the N ippon International Performance Art Festival in Tokyo in 1 998 and 1 996. As an artist, Amanda is committed to working with people from d iverse cultural backgrounds through collaborative projects . DR PAT HOFFIE (p.1 52) Dr Pat Hoffie is a Brisbane-based artist who has worked extensively in the Asia-Pacific region as an artist, curator, project collaborator and writer. She has been involved in the Second Asia-Pacific Trienn ial as a curator and with Patrick D. Flores co-curated the Philippine component for APT3. Dr Hoffie lectures at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith Un iversity, Brisbane. ASSOC. PROFESSOR HUANG ZHUAN (p.62) Huang Zhuan is Associate Professor of the Department of Art H istory of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He has been a long-time editor for Art Trends of Thought, Art & Market, and Art Gallery and has curated 'The 1 st Biennial Art Exh ibition' (Guangzhou, 1 992), 'The Annual Exhibition of Art Critics Nominations (Nanjing, 1 996), 'New Asian Art' (Tokyo, 1 995) and 'Returning Home: Contemporary Chinese Experimental Ink Painting' (USA, 1 996). His publications include Problems of Contemporary Art, Taste, Schema and Value of Literati Painting and Pan Tianshou . For APT3 he was a co-curator for China and a catalogue writer. BETH JACKSON (p.1 38) Beth Jackson is Director of Griffith Artworks, Qld College of Art, Griffith University, Brisbane, Griffith Artworks manages the Griffith University Art Collection of contemporary Australian art. The Collection includes CD ROMs, videos, works on paper, and a large body of political posters, Beth Jackson also works as an independent curator and critical writer. 1 74
