Beyond the Future: Papers from the Third Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art

Dr Turner has undertaken research in cultural history in Britain and the Un ited States, was a member of the Australian Government's Australia-China Council and Austral ia-Indonesia Institute. She has been project director for the APT since its inception , overseeing the intellectual development and management of the project for nearly 1 0 years . She was also the co-curator for Japan for APT3, a catalogue writer for the Third APT, and has been a convenor of all three Asia-Pacific Triennial Conferences in 1 993, 1 996 and 1 999. LILLA WATSON (p.1 8) Lilla Watson is an artist, local Aboriginal Community member, a Trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery (Jan . 1 999-Mar.2000) and Chair of the Reconcil iation and Cultural Development Advisory Committee. She holds a BA in Psychology and Government from the University of Queensland. Her work encompasses design . painting , drawing and portraiture. As a respected artist, she has exhibited her work locally and internationally in various solo and group exhibitions. Her work is represented in corporate and private collections in Australia, the United States and Europe and has appeared in several publications. She is the author of several publications including: One land, One Nation , Women Working Together and the Queensland Arts Council 1 994 Touring Exhibitions Directory. DR JENNIFER WEBB (p.1 1 6) Dr Jen Webb lectures in the School of Creative Communication and Cu lture Studies, University of Canberra, and is also a writer of short fictions and poetry, having publ ished and performed in various literary journals and venues in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Her research interests include the politics of the field of arts, and theories of community formation and identity, and are based on her considerable involvement in various regional arts committees. She is the editor of Re-Siting Theatre: Approaches To Regional Theatre Development (published CQU, 1 997) and co-author of Foucault: Everything You Want To Know (Allen & Unwin, 1 999), and has publ ished a number of book chapters and articles in journals such as Social Semiotics (UK), SPAN (New Zealand), D iacritics (US) and Media International Australia, Journal of Australian Studies and Southern Review (Australia). She is currently co-authoring a book on the writings of Pierre Bourdieu for Allen & Unwin and SAGE . As Publications Officer with the Queensland Art Gallery, Jen Webb edited the APT3 publication, Beyond the Future. JAGATH WEERASINGHE (p.1 65) Jagath Weerasinghe is a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of Conservation Programs, Postgraduate I nstitute of Archaeology at the Un iversity of Kelan iya, and a Lecturer in Art History and Ancient Technology. He is also the Assistant Director of Archaeology on the Sigiriya and Dambulla Projects of the Cultural Triangle Program, and Chairman of the Vibhavi Academy of Fine Arts in Sri Lanka. Born in 1 954, Jagath was educated at the Institute of Aesthetic Stud ies at the Un iversity of Kelan iya, Sri Lanka and was ·awarded a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1 98 1 . He has participated in exhibitions across Sri Lanka, Germany, Japan and America. His first solo exh ibition, 'Anxiety', was held at the National Gallery of Art, Colombo, in 1 992 . Since then he has been a part of the 4th Asian Art Show at the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan, and more recently exhibited his work in 'Private Stuff' ( 1 998), an exh ibition of paintings at the Heritage Gallery. In 1 997, Jagath was involved in the Shrine of the Innocents monument for the victims of political violence and human rights abuse in Sri Lanka. He received the David Lloyed Kreeger Award from the American University in Washington DC in 1 990 and the 'Bunka' award from the Japan-Sri Lanka Cultural Fund in 1 996. He is a participating artist in APT3 PROFESSOR DAVID WILLIAMS (p.1 34) Professor Williams has been Director, Australian National University Canberra School of Art since 1 985. Formerly Director, Crafts Board Australia Council, he is a graduate of Melbourne Teachers College, RMIT and La Trobe University. He is an active member of the visual arts community at regional and national level as Chair or a member of a wide range of Boards and Committees. He has travelled extensively in SE and North Asia & Europe and is a regular contributor to conferences, seminars and publ ications. He has been a member of the QAG Curatorial Committee for the APT since its inception with a particular i nvolvement in Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and Korea . For APT3 he was co-curator for Malaysia and a catalogue writer. 1 79
