The Sixth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art

16 Premier’s message Anna Bligh mp Premier of Queensland and Minister for the Arts The Queensland Art Gallery’s Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) has become one of Australia’s most anticipated international cultural events, earning Queensland an enviable position in the contemporary art world. The Queensland Government has supported the Asia Pacific Triennial since its inception in 1993, building the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) as a home for this spectacular exhibition and for contemporary art. APT6 incorporates more than 100 artists from many nations and across many disciplines. GoMA has dedicated more than 5000 square metres of gallery, cinema and children’s activity space to the exhibition, and the original Queensland Art Gallery has also devoted significant space to the Triennial. The Queensland Art Gallery is recognised as an international leader in contemporary Asian and Pacific art and has been building its collection for almost two decades. The APT is unique and remains the only recurring exhibition to focus on the contemporary art of Asia, the Pacific and Australia. It attracts strong interest from outside Queensland, with more than a third of visitors to APT5 coming from interstate or overseas. With the five exhibitions since 1993 attracting a total of more than 1.3 million visitors, it’s clear there’s an audience for art work from Asia and the Pacific. This event brings together two of Queensland’s mainstays — our cultural and tourism industries — and I encourage Queenslanders to experience for themselves this fantastic celebration of contemporary visual art.
