APT6 in Review

40 APT6 exhibition publication. Photograph: Natasha Harth As the only major series of exhibitions to focus on the contemporary art of Asia, Australia and the Pacific, the accompanying APT exhibition publications are a major initiative by the Gallery under the auspices of the Australian Centre of Asia Pacific Art (ACAPA). The 260-page full-colour APT6 exhibition catalogue featured over 250 illustrations and included lead essays by the Gallery’s APT6 curatorial team, exploring the traditions and histories informing the complex artistic practice of the region and its place in an international context. Mansudae Art Studio, The Mekong project and Pacific Reggae: Roots Beyond the Reef were profiled, as was the Kids’ APT, with an overview essay and details of the individual projects. The publication was accompanied by a CD with 12 songs from Pacific Reggae: Roots Beyond the Reef. When the popular catalogue sold out towards the end of the exhibition, a free, downloadable PDF was made available on the Gallery’s website. The December–February 2009–10 issue of Artlines , the Gallery’s Members magazine, included interviews with Raafat Ishak, a Melbourne-based artist born in Cairo; Rose Issa, a specialist in film and visual art of the Middle East; Nicholas Bonner, a Beijing-based curator closely involved with projects in North Korea; and articles by Suhanya Raffel, Curatorial Manager, Asian and Pacific Art; and Russell Storer, Curator, Contemporary Asian Art.
