Discreetly placed away from the main Gallery thoroughfares and out of hands’ reach, his tiny sculpture can be viewed through a strategically positioned telescope located in the Gallery. The use of an instrument intended for observing distant stars or fathoming the infinite signals the artist’s playful manipulation of perceptions of scale and distance. Iwasaki takes the distortion further by using surprising materials to re-create one of the world’s largest and most solid structures in miniature form. ROSLISHAM ISMAIL (aka ISE) Malaysia b.1972 Children’s workshop, Sira pisang ( Glazed banana ) 2012 Photograph: Mark Sherwood ROSLISHAM ISMAIL (aka ISE) Sira pisang ( Glazed banana ) 2012 Malaysian artist Roslisham Ismail, also known as Ise, explores the experiences of people living in particular communities and the ordinary activities of daily life. Ise selected a traditional Malaysian recipe, Sira pisang ( Glazed banana ), to be on the Kids’ Menu at the GOMA Cafe Bistro during the 2012–13 summer holidays. The dessert has the unique taste of banana combined with a gentle flavour extracted from the pandanus leaf and is served on a placemat depicting Ise’s beautifully drawn recipe instructions and illustrations. Young diners will enjoy a feast of the senses while participating in a cultural tradition generously shared by the artist’s family and their community. The recipe for this dish also appears in The Langkasuka Cookbook , Ise’s artist project for APT7. 273
