The Eighth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art
Richard Bell Born 1953, Charleville, Australia Kamilaroi/Jiman/Kooma people 15 Minutes 2015 Richard Bell, one of the founders of proppaNOW, a Brisbane-based Aboriginal art collective, creates works that make strong statements on political, cultural, social and economic subjects, often providing an alternative voice to the mainstream. For APT8 Kids, he gives children an opportunity to have their own 15 minutes of fame and to express their opinions, which are then presented in a video installation compiled from interviews between the artist and Queensland children. For the interviews, the artist invited children to talk about their interests, ambitions and what they think makes them special. Lawrence English Born 1976, Brisbane, Australia Everyday Whispers 2015 Lawrence English is interested in drawing attention to sounds that sit on the periphery of our hearing. For APT8 Kids, he encourages children to explore the way people communicate, encouraging an intensive way of listening by recording a wish for themselves, their families, the environment or the world in recording booths, which others can then hear. Over the course of the exhibition, wishes will be collected and played through an acoustic chamber suspended from the Gallery’s ceiling. As visitors walk underneath the speakers, they will encounter a choir of indistinct voices, a rain of wishes.
