The Eighth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art

Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra Born 1985, Sydney, Australia Born 1990, Sydney Club Anak (Club Child) 2015 Justin Shoulder and Bhenji Ra create artworks that explore mythical beings from different cultures. As part of APT8 Kids, children and families are invited to enter their installation Club Anak (Club Child) . Drawing on the concept of the digital avatar, children can create their own mythical character by combining different physical attributes. After completing their avatar, children enter an immersive space in which they can add their avatar to a sculptural landscape to form a community of different characters. Venkat Raman Singh Shyam Born 1970, Sijhora, Madhya Pradesh, India Pardhan Gond people The Woman and the Parrot 2015 Venkat Raman Singh Shyam is featured in APT8 as part of the focus on the contemporary indigenous and vernacular art of India, called Kalpa Vriksha. In addition to a mural and paintings shown as part of Kalpa Vriksha, Shyam presents a drawing activity for children based on the distinctive patterns used in Gond art and a story entitled The Woman and the Parrot . The Gond people are one of the largest indigenous groups in India, and their artworks use intricate patterns and vibrant colours to depict local flora, fauna and deities. Children are invited to learn about the meaning and significance of the different patterns and to use these to adorn templates.
