5 4 ARTLINES 4 | 2020 MESSAGE MESSAGE Welcome back to Artlines for our final issue of 2020. We remain grateful to be able to have visitors in the Gallery again, even as so many of our colleagues around Australia and the world grapple with the continued impact of the pandemic. Our cautious return has been buoyed by feedback from visitors, as ‘Mavis Ngallametta: Show Me the Way to Go Home’, ‘Two Sisters – A Singular Vision’ and evolving Collection displays have brought QAG back to life, followed by several dynamic displays at GOMA and two major summer exhibitions: ‘The Motorcycle: Design, Art, Desire’ and ‘Unfinished Business: The Art of Gordon Bennett’. Through these exhibitions, alongside our presentation of the Brisbane International Film Festival in October, we have streamlined and fine-tuned our new COVID-safe world. We are proud to be something of a refuge and anchor point in these often unpredictable times, and grateful for our audience’s enthusiasm for returning and the care they’ve taken to follow the health and safety guidelines we must all now contend with in public. We really are in this together. Queensland’s positive response to such safety measures has allowed us to open ‘The Motorcycle’ — possibly the first international blockbuster in a major Australian art museum (and perhaps one of the first in the world!) to be held in the COVID era. We’ve done everything we can to make it safe while still being a thrilling journey. The exhibition includes Shaun Gladwell’s mesmerising video work Approach to Mundi Mundi 2007 in the midst of the motorcycles, and a special adjacent project inviting some of Australia’s most renowned contemporary artists to decorate a motorcycle helmet in their own styles. Meanwhile, Australian artist Ross Manning has presented a parallel installation in the Children’s Art Centre — ‘Idling Engines’ explores Manning’s kinetic sculptural installations created from everyday objects and electronics. As we move into 2021, we’ll continue to apply what we’ve learned this year as we present a survey of Queensland-born artist William Yang’s deeply personal and invariably moving photography at QAG. We are also preparing for our major exhibition from the Metropolitan Museum of Art next winter. It has been a pleasure for the Gallery to work with this august institution again to present what is undoubtedly the greatest collection of European paintings ever to visit Queensland. This is an exhibition very close to my heart and I can’t wait to share it with you. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy summer.
