JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL CLASSICS 2020 8–27 January | GOMA This year’s program celebrates boundary shattering films through Japanese cinematic history, notoriously recognised for their offbeat, rebellious and eye-opening qualities. With a spotlight on some of Japan’s leading experimental filmmakers, this selection broadly encapsulates films that were fiercely uncompromising and transcended convention, with each leaving its mark on Japan’s film industry. From their themes of social, political and sexual ferment to their dynamic and provocative colour, editing and cinematography, these films are nothing like you’ve seen before. This free Classics program is part of the annual Japanese Film Festival, presented by the Japan Foundation, Sydney, and made possible by the Japan Foundation Film Library. Largely underappreciated in the West, his films are revered in Russia, with cinema legend Andrei Tarkovsky even declaring German’s My Friend Ivan Lapshin 1984 the ‘best Soviet film ever made’. His stunning black-and-white visuals and textured depiction of Soviet life remain powerful to this day, crossing over multiple genres: from post-war drama ( The Seventh Companion 1967) to black comedy (the newly restored Khrustalyov, My Car! 1998) and science-fiction ( Hard to be a God 2013). This retrospective will also include a documentary portrait of German ( Playback 2012), shot on the set of his final film. For information visit qagoma.qld.gov.au/cinema.
